Recovery Time after Dental Implant

No matter what the reason for your tooth loss is, you will always want to go for the best option for tooth restoration. When we talk about best, we talk about dental implant. The dental implant doesn’t only restore your tooth aesthetically but it also restores the function of tooth to the fullest.

Here, you may wonder about the time an implant can take to be able to become fully usable. It depends upon the recovery time of implant. The sooner the tooth recovers, the sooner you will be able to use it for your normal eating habits.

Dental implant procedure

Process of dental implant generally involves extraction of the previous tooth if it is still there. After the extraction, a titanium post is inserted into the jawbone. This post is secured from the top with the help of a dental crown which looks like the natural tooth.

The process is usually carried out after administration of local anesthesia, general anesthesia, or sedation. Although dentists will decide which option is appropriate, the end decision is going to be yours.

If there is not enough amount of jawbone present in the area of lost tooth, you may have to go for the bone grafting treatment. In this treatment, the dentists take out small portion of bone from other part of the body. This bone is then grafted into the area of lost tooth.

Recovery and regrowth

Once the process of implantation is complete, the recovery process begins. The dental implant doesn’t get into a position to support your normal chewing right after the surgical process. The body needs to generate bone which could support implant. This process is known as Osseo-integration. The dental implant needs at least a few months in order to get fully accommodated into your mouth. Until your tooth gets fully ready, you will need to ensure that you are not eating hard foods. Upon the completion of Osseo-integration, you will get a permanent crown on your dental implant.

You will see the area around implant bleeding for at least 2 – 3 days after surgery. It is pretty normal and you don’t need to worry about it. The bleeding and swelling go away with time.

Here, you will have to make sure that you brush your teeth gently. Moreover, you have to make sure that you are not chewing hard foods in the area of implant.

Taking care of your dental implant

Just because it is an artificial tooth doesn’t mean that you should not take care of this tooth. Dental implant failure at any stage is the last thing you would want. So you have to make sure that you are taking care of your implant in the same way as required for the normal teeth. Moreover, you need to keep visiting your dentist every now and then to make sure that your dental implant remains there in your mouth.
